What Does a Boudoir Session Look Like From Start to Finish?

Every photo shoot with me is a guided experience that will help you get the best photos you’ve ever seen of yourself. To help you understand what a session looks like from start to finish, this boudoir photo shoot overview will lay out the whole process.

Planning Your Session

We always start with a style consultation over the phone or on a video call, whatever feels easiest for you. This is where we sit down (well, virtually) and talk through everything so your session is set up for success from the very beginning.

We’ll look at the images from my portfolio that resonated with you most and figure out what you like stylistically. Then we’ll plan the specifics of your shoot around that. We’ll also decide which personal care appointments you should book and when to schedule them, talk about outfit ideas that will flatter your specific body type, and discuss location possibilities. We’ll even talk about how you want to display your final artwork so I can capture your photos with that in mind.

What Does a Boudoir Session Look Like From Start To Finish

If you’d like to get a head start, everything we cover is in my boudoir guide. Don’t worry if all of this sounds overwhelming. I’ll show you exactly how to prepare during our planning call and I’m happy to help with as much or as little as you need leading up to your session.

Planning is the most important step for getting photos like the ones you see in my portfolio.

How Long Before a Wedding to Do a Boudoir Shoot?

The amount of time you’ll need will depend on how you want to present your photos. The following are good safe timelines if you want to gift your husband something on your wedding day:

ProductWhen You Should Book Your Photo Shoot Date
Digital FilesWithin a week for select photos or small collections, within 2 weeks for large collections
Boudoir Album2 months before your wedding
Prints & Folio Box Collections1 month before your wedding
3D Retro Viewers4-6 weeks before your wedding. Reels without nudity will arrive faster

All of these timelines should be thought of as the minimum time needed to get these products delivered to you on time.

Booking Your Session Date

You’re ready for the full photo shoot experience. That’s fantastic! All you have to do now is pick your date and submit your retainer to lock in your date.

This retainer is non-refundable and reserves your session date, secures your hair and makeup artist and covers the cost of your photo session. Your final images are purchased separately after I deliver your proofing gallery of your sessions images.

Her legs are elegantly raised to reveal a large colorful floral tattoo on her thigh and she wears black lace lingerie with eyes closed in a relaxed expression as soft warm lighting creates gentle shadows across the peaceful composition.

Boudoir Makeover

Before we start shooting, my makeup artist will enhance your features with a professional makeover. Basically you can tell her to do whatever style you want or show her your Pinterest board and she’ll work toward that look with you.

Alternatively, you can just let her do whatever she wants. That always turns out spectacular! Some women want natural looks while others choose to liven things up with more dramatic eye shadows and lip stains. It’s totally up to you. I think both looks can be beautiful in the right context.

Whatever look you decide to go with, your boudoir makeover includes:

  • Skin Pre-Moisturizing
  • Foundation & Contouring
  • Custom Eye Shadows
  • Eyeliner, Wing Tips and or Waterline
  • Mascara or Strip Lashes
  • Custom Lip Liner & Stains
  • Hair Curling or Straightening

Your Boudoir Session

Right after your makeover we’ll start your boudoir photo shoot. You’ll be fully prepared thanks to the checklist I gave you the week before.

I’ll show you how to pose your body and how to communicate expressively with the camera. Once you know the basics I’ll guide you into flattering poses and capture you in beautiful light.

Just bring the outfits you’ve chosen and your favorite champagne. I’ll handle everything else! Keep in mind that a photo shoot with me is an all-day experience, usually from 10AM to 6PM.

If you want to repurpose your makeup for a dinner date after your shoot, just let me know so I can make sure to wrap up in time.

She poses against an intricate wall in the background with blonde hair visible through an arched opening as warm golden lighting casts soft shadows across the luxurious room featuring a fireplace mantel and mirror in the low angle composition.

Choosing Your Boudoir Photos

After your photo shoot I’ll sort through all the images and curate my favorites for you. This culled gallery will be globally edited in Lightroom (no Photoshop) so the images are properly exposed and white balanced for your review.

Some people want to see all the captures from the session, which is something I do not recommend because it’s just too many photos. If you really want them though, I will provide a low-res, watermarked proofing gallery of every single capture.

If you’re getting an album, I’ll also pre-design it for you and include it with your culled gallery.

Designing Your Boudoir Album

Once you have your images and the preliminary album design, it’s generally best to do a screen share with me to finalize your album design and select which images you want from your session.

This screen share must be done from a desktop or laptop so you can review the photo and album design together and make final design decisions.

Once we know which images you want and how you’d like your album designed, I can give you a total price for your final collection.

Hand Editing Your Boudoir Photos

Once you’ve selected and purchased your favorite images, I’ll begin editing your photos.

Every image will be hand edited by me in Photoshop so they look their absolute best.

Once I’m finished with your edits, I’ll send you the final images digitally along with a final draft of your album.

Once you approve the final edits I will then send your products to my lab to have them made for you.

Delivering Your Boudoir Photos

Your digital files will be available for download within two weeks of your final payment (via Google Drive).

Albums will be drop shipped to you roughly 10-15 days after you approve the final design.

Large format prints, folio boxes, and retro viewers will be drop shipped to you roughly 5-10 days after your final images are approved.

This is what you can expect when your boudoir photos are delivered. The photo shows a brown cardboard box on a marble surface showcasing a cream fabric pouch topped with a light green thank you card. The card features the word folio in stylized text while bright lighting illuminates the neutral colors and centered arrangement in the top down view.
